AI Cites Shopify Stores' Blog Posts, Not Their Product Pages [A Study of About 4,000 AI Citations]

Last updated: October 2, 2026 / Genview team, FID Ltd.

This is Part 1 (the research) of our series "Shopify × AI Search."

Key findings

If you want your store to show up in AI answers, polishing your product pages is not enough. You need articles that answer the questions your customers ask AI.

1. Why we studied which pages AI cites

More and more people skip the search engine before they buy. Instead, they ask ChatGPT or Gemini "What's the best...?" or "How do I choose a...?" In its answer, the AI often lists the pages it drew on as sources (citations). If your store is one of those citations, that is a way for customers to discover you.

Traditional SEO focused on getting product and category pages to rank high in search results. So which Shopify store pages does AI cite in its answers? To find out, we asked AI real shopping questions and checked every cited page, one by one.

2. How we ran the study

Item Details
Date October 1, 2026
AIs ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok (all with web search on)
Questions 50 questions in English: 10 categories (skincare, coffee, protein, apparel, camping gear, pet food, furniture, jewelry, gifts, sneakers) × 5 question types (how to choose, best picks, difference, how to use, problems)
Runs The same 50 questions, asked twice (to check whether the results were stable)
Citations Run 1: 1,728; Run 2: 1,704 (827 citations from 25 Japanese questions are counted separately in "7. Questions asked in Japanese")
How we identified Shopify We opened every cited page and checked whether its content showed traces of Shopify, or whether its domain pointed to Shopify's servers
Conducted by FID Ltd. (Genview)

Note: AI answers change from day to day and from run to run, even for the same question. These numbers reflect the conditions above. Note: We asked Claude the same questions, but it did not return sources (cited URLs), so it is not included.

A note on how we identified Shopify stores: Many Shopify stores refuse to load when they get several requests in a short time (bot protection). If we had judged only by page content, those stores would have been counted as "not Shopify," and the share would have come out far lower than it really is (about 3% in this study). So we also checked whether each domain pointed to Shopify's servers. For every page whose content we could read, the two methods never disagreed.

3. Finding 1: 1 in 5 AI citations is a Shopify store

Citations Shopify store pages Share
Run 1 1,728 355 20.5%
Run 2 1,704 349 20.5%

Source: FID Ltd. (Genview) study, October 1, 2026. 50 English questions × 2 runs; ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok

In both runs, 1 in 5 citations was a Shopify store page. Out of 50 questions, at least one Shopify page was cited for 49 questions in Run 1 and 47 in Run 2. For almost every question, a Shopify store was among the sources.

AI answers do not cite only big media outlets and review sites. Individual stores have a real chance of being cited.

4. Finding 2: 76% of citations are blog posts; 6% are product pages

We sorted the cited Shopify pages (704 in total across both runs) by page type, based on the URL.

76% of cited Shopify pages are blog posts

Blog posts (/blogs/) 537 76%
Product pages (/products/) 40 6%
Collections (/collections/) 37 5%
Pages (/pages/) 39 6%
Home page and other 51 7%

Three out of four were blog posts. Product pages were 6%, less than a tenth of the blog posts.

In other words, AI chose pages that answer the question in written text as its sources, rather than product pages, which are the store's "sales floor."

If your store only has product pages

A store with no blog has almost no way in to being cited by AI. Before customers can even weigh your quality or prices, your store is likely to have a hard time making it into AI's list of candidates.

5. Finding 3: Zero product pages cited for "how to choose" and "difference" questions

We broke down the cited Shopify pages by question type (both runs combined).

Difference What is the difference between light roast and dark roast? 148 92% 0
How to use / problems How can I wear sunscreen every day without breakouts? 172 82% 6
Best picks What are the best skincare brands for sensitive skin? 228 51% 34

For "how to choose" and "difference" questions, not one product page was cited in either run. Nearly all product page citations came from "what's the best...?" questions.

A "how to choose" question comes from a customer who hasn't picked a product yet and wants to know what to compare. Here, AI builds an answer that explains how to choose. A product page, which describes a single product, is hard to use for that.

This means that at the moment a customer first starts choosing, product pages don't get a turn. To be cited at that moment, you need articles that explain how to choose and compare options.

6. Finding 4: Each AI cites Shopify stores differently

ChatGPT 291 73 25%
Grok 866 121 14%
Perplexity 1,000 51 5%

"Being cited by AI" looks very different depending on the AI. Being cited by one AI doesn't mean you are cited by the others. We cover these differences, and how to check each AI, in Part 3.

7. Questions asked in Japanese

We also asked 25 of the same questions in Japanese (the first half of the 10 categories). Of 827 citations, 73 were Shopify stores (8.8%). We think the share is lower than in English because many Japanese online stores use carts other than Shopify or sell through large marketplaces.

The pattern matched English: 66% of the Shopify pages were blog posts, and product pages got zero citations for "how to choose" questions.

8. Why product pages rarely get cited (interpretation)

From here on, this is our interpretation of the results.

Reason 1: They aren't written to answer questions

Product pages list specs, price, materials and sizes. But customers ask AI "Who is this for?", "How is it different from others?" and "How should I choose?" Most product pages have no text that answers these questions directly.

Reason 2: There's nothing to compare

When AI builds an answer, it compares and summarizes several sources. A page that describes only one product can't support a comparison answer like "Which is better, A or B?" or "Which one fits my budget?" The fact that product pages got zero citations for "difference" questions fits with this.

Reason 3: There's little text to cite

Product pages tend to be mostly images and short bullet points. AI cites text, so pages with little text are probably less likely to be cited.

Reason 4: Articles are shaped like answers

A blog post explains one topic step by step, with headings and paragraphs. The answer to a question is written out in one place, so it is easy for AI to use as material for its answer.

9. Three takeaways for Shopify stores

Takeaway 1: Have "answer articles" separate from your product pages

Articles get cited; product pages get the sale

How customers get from an AI answer to your store, and the role of each page

Customer's question"How do I choose a tent as a beginner camper?"
AI answerChatGPT, Gemini and others answer and list their sources
Blog postCited as a source (the way in)
Product pageReached via a link in the article, where the sale happens

Product pages matter when customers are ready to buy. Separately, prepare articles that answer the questions customers ask AI. Think of it as a division of roles: articles get cited; product pages get the sale.

Takeaway 2: Start with "how to choose" and "difference" articles

For "how to choose" and "difference" questions, zero product pages were cited and over 90% of citations were blog posts. It's most efficient to start with articles that reach customers at the earliest stage, before they've picked a product.

Takeaway 3: Check results for each AI

Because each AI cites Shopify stores differently, you need to check "Am I being cited?" separately for each AI. After you publish articles, regularly check which AI cited you and for which questions, then add articles for the questions where you aren't cited.

We explain exactly how to write these articles in Part 2.

FAQ

Q. If I improve my product pages, will AI cite them? A. In this study, product pages were 6% of cited Shopify pages, and almost all of those came from "what's the best...?" questions. Good product pages matter when customers buy, but to be cited by AI, we think it is better to also have separate articles that answer questions.

Q. What kind of articles are more likely to be cited by AI? A. Articles that answer the question at the top and explain, in writing, how to choose and how options compare. Part 2 covers how to write them.

Q. Is there a difference between ChatGPT and Gemini? A. Yes. In this study, Gemini cited Shopify stores the most times, and Shopify's share of sources was 36% for Gemini and 25% for ChatGPT. Part 3 covers the differences between AIs.

Q. If I write a blog, will AI definitely cite it? A. Not necessarily. What this study found is that "most of the Shopify pages that were cited were articles." After you write, check whether each AI cites you, and add articles for the questions where you aren't cited.

Q. Can I create these articles with Shopify's built-in blog? A. Yes. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Blog posts. You don't need to change your theme.
