Rich results are a format in which information such as images, star ratings, FAQs, and prices is visually expanded in Google's search results page (SERP) in addition to the standard title, URL, and description. In the context of GEO strategy, they are positioned as a by-product of structured data implementation and are not the direct goal of GEO strategy.

What Are Rich Results?
Rich results are a format in which information such as images, star ratings, FAQs, prices, and recipes is visually expanded in Google's search results page (SERP) in addition to the standard title, URL, and description snippet.
Rich results are displayed by Google for pages that correctly implement Schema.org structured data. By conveying page content in a "machine-readable format," Google becomes able to visually represent that information in search results.
The table below summarizes the main types of rich results, their corresponding Schema types, and the information displayed.
Main Types of Rich Results and Corresponding Schema Types

Changes Since 2023
In August 2023, Google announced that the display of FAQ rich results would be limited to authoritative sites such as government and medical institutions. Since then, opportunities for FAQ rich results to appear have further declined, and as of 2026, visual benefits in search results for general sites are largely not to be expected.
However, Google continues to publish the rich results specification, and while display is not guaranteed, the value of implementing structured data has not disappeared.
Genview's Definition
In the context of GEO strategy, Genview defines rich results as "a visual expansion in search results obtained as a by-product of structured data implementation; they are not the direct goal of GEO strategy, but rather something that accompanies the establishment of structured data."
This definition represents Genview's perspective and does not reflect an industry-wide consensus.
Genview's adoption of this positioning is based on three points.
- Following the reduction in FAQ rich result displays (August 2023), the motivation of "implementing FAQPage Schema to obtain rich results" has diminished. However, FAQPage Schema's role of reinforcing the Q&A correspondence in a machine-readable form continues, and it is believed that the purpose of implementation has shifted from SEO to supplementary GEO strategy.
- Organization Schema may be displayed by Google as a Knowledge Panel. The Knowledge Panel reinforces the recognition of a brand as an entity, which aligns with the GEO strategy goal of "getting AI to recognize who you are."
- Article Schema and Person Schema declare authors, publication dates, and content types in structured data. This may function supplementarily in the GEO strategy context as a means of conveying E-E-A-T-related information in a machine-readable form. However, direct causal relationships have not been confirmed as of May 2026.
Parent Concepts and Related Terms
Rich results are displayed as the result of structured data implementation, and are positioned as a supplementary concept in GEO strategy. The following organizes the concepts related to rich results.
Parent Concepts
- Structured Data (Schema.org): Rich results are displayed as the result of Schema.org structured data being correctly implemented. Implementing structured data is a prerequisite for obtaining rich results.
- SERP (Search Engine Results Page): Short for Search Engine Results Page. Rich results are displayed on SERPs.
- GEO (Generative Engine Optimization): The overall initiative to optimize brand visibility in AI-generated responses. Rich results are not a direct GEO strategy measure, but function supplementarily through structured data maintenance.
Related Terms
- FAQPage Structured Data: The Schema type used for FAQ rich result implementation. Since the display reduction from 2023 onwards, priority for rich result acquisition purposes has decreased. However, its role as a means of machine-readably reinforcing Q&A correspondence continues.
- Knowledge Panel: An information panel displayed on the right side of search results for brands, individuals, and organizations that Google has recognized as Entities. Explicitly declaring Entity through Organization Schema and Person Schema may be related to Knowledge Panel display.
- E-E-A-T: Google's content quality evaluation framework. The Schemas used for rich results (Article, Person, Organization) are related as means of conveying E-E-A-T-related information in machine-readable form.
- Entity: A target that AI and search engines recognize as "a concept, thing, person, or organization with distinct meaning." Organization and Person Schemas function as means of explicitly declaring Entity to Google.
Common Misconceptions
The following three misconceptions about rich results are frequently observed.
Misconception 1: "Displaying rich results constitutes GEO strategy."
Rich results are a visual expansion on the search results page (SERP) and have no direct relationship to AI response generation. GEO strategy is about creating a state in which brands are correctly cited and mentioned within AI responses, and obtaining rich results is not the goal of GEO strategy. While there is a possibility that structured data implementation functions as a supplement to GEO strategy, rich result display and AI citation are separate matters.
Misconception 2: "Since FAQ rich results are no longer displayed, FAQPage Schema is unnecessary."
The reduction in FAQ rich result display since 2023 concerns the visual effect on the SERP. FAQPage Schema's role of reinforcing Q&A correspondence in a machine-readable form continues. "Rich results not appearing does not equal Schema being meaningless."
Misconception 3: "Implementing structured data guarantees rich result display."
Implementing structured data is a necessary but not sufficient condition for rich result display. Google does not guarantee rich result display. Even with correct implementation, results may not appear due to multiple factors including page quality, authority, and content appropriateness.
FAQ
- Q: Where can I verify the rich results implementation status?
- A: Entering a URL in Google's Rich Results Test allows you to check the structured data implementation status and whether the page is eligible for rich results. The Enhancements section of Google Search Console can also be used to understand Schema implementation status across the entire site.
- Q: Should rich results be considered in GEO strategy?
- A: There is no need to make rich results themselves the goal of GEO strategy. However, the structured data used for rich results (Organization, Person, Article Schema) is supplementarily effective in the GEO strategy context as a means of conveying entities and E-E-A-T in a machine-readable form. Positioning it as being "for semantic reinforcement to AI" rather than "for rich results" is the appropriate approach at this time.
- Q: How can I get a Knowledge Panel to appear?
- A: The Knowledge Panel is something Google automatically displays for brands, people, and organizations it has recognized as entities, and cannot be directly requested. Implementing Organization Schema and Person Schema, acquiring mentions from Wikipedia and other high-credibility external sites, and maintaining consistent information across the web may be related to Knowledge Panel display. However, Google has not officially disclosed the criteria for display.
