GEO KPIs and How to Think About AI Citation Count
When measuring GEO strategy results, it's tempting to focus on AI citation count. But citation count alone has its limits. Here's how Genview recommends thinking about GEO KPIs.
Is AI Citation Count Important?
Citation count is a meaningful metric, but it's not sufficient on its own. There are three reasons why:
- Citation ≠ recommendation: Being mentioned and being presented as a recommendation by AI are different things. Simply appearing by name doesn't lead to conversions.
- Recommendation ≠ selection: Even appearing as a comparison candidate doesn't mean the user will choose you.
- Misrecognized citations are harmful: Being cited in the wrong industry or context spreads misunderstanding about your brand.
The KPIs Genview Recommends
Rather than citation count, Genview recommends prioritizing these three indicators:
- Is the brand being recognized correctly? Is AI describing your brand in the right industry and context? Misrecognition requires priority action.
- Is it appearing as a comparison candidate? Does your brand appear when users ask "recommend a tool" or "compare X and Y"?
- Is it appearing in purchase-intent queries? Appearance rates in MOFU–BOFU queries (such as "show me case studies" or "compare pricing") have the strongest connection to sales conversations and conversions.
"Not Mentioned" Is the Biggest Growth Opportunity
Even if your overall GEO score looks high, a high rate of "not mentioned" in your target queries means significant room for growth. "Not mentioned" in purchase-intent queries in particular should be the top priority for your next improvement actions.
Conversely, "misrecognized" is a warning signal. AI treating your brand as a different industry indicates insufficient information setup and requires prompt attention.

The Relationship Between GEO Score and KPIs
Genview's GEO score is a comprehensive metric that incorporates these KPIs. But rather than looking at the score number alone, checking citation status by query, misrecognition presence, and competitor gaps together gives a more accurate picture of your current state and clearer direction for next steps.
