What Is the Difference Between Being Recognized and Recommended by AI?
There's an important distinction in GEO strategy. Being "recognized" by AI and being "recommended" by AI are different states, each requiring different approaches.
What Is Recognition?
Recognition means "AI knows your brand exists." It's the state where AI accurately understands your brand name, service description, industry, and operating company — and can correctly describe you when asked directly.
For example, if someone asks "what is Genview?" and AI correctly describes it as a GEO tool, that's a recognized state.
The foundation of recognition is entity building — Organization schema, Person schema, sameAs, and a company profile page.

What Is Recommendation?
Recommendation means "AI presents your brand as a candidate when answering a specific query." It's the state where AI includes your brand when a user asks a question without naming your brand directly.
For example, appearing in responses to neutral queries like "recommend a GEO tool" or "compare tools for AI search optimization" is the recommended state.
Getting recommended requires more than recognition — it also requires publishing primary source information, earning external media coverage, and being mentioned in competitive contexts.
The Recognition → Recommendation → Selection Flow
The ideal GEO state builds up through recognition, recommendation, and selection in sequence:
- Recognition: AI correctly understands your brand
- Recommendation: AI presents your brand as a candidate for relevant queries
- Selection: Users choose your brand based on AI responses
High citation count with frequent misrecognition indicates a recognition problem. Being recommended but not selected may point to landing page or proposal issues rather than a GEO problem.
How to Check in Genview
Genview's dashboard shows the status — matched, misrecognized, or not mentioned — for each monitored query.
- Direct brand queries (e.g., "what is Genview?"): Check recognition status
- Neutral queries (e.g., "best GEO tools?"): Check recommendation status
If misrecognition exists, entity building is the priority. If "not mentioned" is frequent, the next actions are publishing primary source content and earning external citations.
